Re-elected American President Barack
Obama has not only secured himself another term as the President of the United
States, but also tweeted himself into the record books of hugely-popular
microblogging site Twitter.
Late on Tuesday night (US time) Obama tweeted a picture of himself
embracing his wife Michelle, with the caption “Four more years” – which sparked
a retweet frenzy by Twitter users. At the time of writing this, his tweet had
been retweeted more than 445 000 times.
According to Buzzfeed, the record was set in just 22 minutes, and
beats the previous record held by pop singer Justin Bieber. The singer’s “RIP
Avalanna. i love you” garnered over 200 000 retweets.
According to The Verge, “Twitter’s Government feed has also
confirmed that this year’s Election Day was the “most tweeted about event in US
political history,” with over 20 million tweets.
The service saw a rate of 327,000 tweets per minute following news
of Obama’s re-election.”
Presidential challenger Mitt Romney conceded victory to Obama late
on Tuesday night, and called Obama to congratulate him. “This is a time of
great challenges for America and I pray that the president will be successful
in guiding our nation. His supporters and his campaign also deserve
congratulations. I wish all of them well but particularly the president, the
first lady and their daughters,” Romney told supporters.
